Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial, ca. mid-19th century CE. A glorious framed painting of the Trinity -- the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost -- depicted as three haloed images of the same person, as was common in Byzantine art, identical young men only identifiable by the symbols on their breasts, floating above seven winged putti in the cloud-filled celestial realm. God the Father appears in the center holding a sceptor with a sun across his chest. The Son is on his right with a lamb and also showing the marks of crucifixion. The Holy Ghost is presented to the Father's left with a dove. The Son is typically dressed in a blue robe or in red with a blue mantle, as we see here, symbolizing heaven and divine love. Usually, the Father is usually dressed in all white symbolizing purity, faith, and light, and the Holy Ghost is dressed in red symbolizing a martyr's blood and royalty. In this painting, however, The Father and the Holy Ghost are dressed in the same manner as The Son. A large and impressive example, mounted in custom black and gold carved wood frame, ornamented with a lovely foliate motif. Interestingly, this depition of The Holy Trinity as three identical persons disregarded the ban imposed by Pope Benedict XIV in 1745. Furthermore, representing the Holy Ghost as a human was previously condemned by Pope Urban VIII in 1623.
