Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden sculpture of Jesus lying on a bed attached to a cross with pointed arms. Enveloped in black pigment. Jesus wears a loincloth and has one hand on his lap and the other to his side, while the cross is secured to a log-like base. Size: 8.7" W x 15.9" H (22.1 cm x 40.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Jesus and cross are not original to one another, but both constructed in the period stated and joined at a later date. Surface wear as shown. Cross slightly loose in base and stable fissures to verso and base. Ample remaining pigments on Jesus and nice patina throughout.
