New World, Mexico, Spanish Colonial period, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful antique wooden chest with a brilliantly painted surface. The interior features a large dove over a rose bush, painted on a brilliantly red background. The exterior has a patriotic scene of the Mexican flag complete with eagle clutching snake on the top of the lid, while the front of the chest is painted with a dramatic view of ships on a river in front of a cathedral as a large white bird looks on. Floral decorations, predominantly red, blue, and green on a black background, frame each of these scenes and brighten the other sides of the chest. Size: 18" L x 34.5" W x 17" H (45.7 cm x 87.6 cm x 43.2 cm); 25" H (63.5 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: The top of the chest has some separation/cracking of the wood commensurate with age and use. Losses to pigment as shown, but in general the motifs are very well preserved.
