Description:

Central Europe, Spain, ca. 19th century CE. A brass and iron hanging scale with original wooden case and four weights. The iron beams have small S hooks that suspend twine cords that attach through perforations on the edges of the shallow brass pans. The center of the beam has a thin pointed balance bar. The wooden case holds four brass weights between 1/8 and 1 ounce (3.3 to 27 grams). Scales such as this were used by jewelers or apothecaries to weigh minute amounts of materials. The hinged box has slots for storing the scale body and the weights, as well as a small pocket for perhaps tweezers or another tool. An interesting antique Spanish scale that still fits snugly in its original box. Size of box: 6.25" L x 3.5" W (15.9 cm x 8.9 cm); length of beam: 5.5" L (14 cm)
