Description:

Western Europe, Spain, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A spectacular brass Catholic sanctuary lamp with areas of gold gilt, the surface etched with saints and repousse scrollwork in the rococo style, featuring relief cherubs at each corner of the main burner or font area. The three sides are adorned with gilt cartouches surrounding images of Saint Anna, Saint Anthony, and Ferdinand, presumably King Ferdinand III of Castile. The chains are decorated with three domed disc ornaments, also gilt. The canopy top ring is attached to a wrought iron stem and ring for suspension - likely a later addition. It was converted to electric lighting, but the wires are cut, and the sockets are outdated, requiring replacement; however, the wiring detracts from the visual appeal, so we recommend using remote-controlled or battery-operated candles or 'smart' lightbulbs. Size when suspended: 57.75" L x 12.5" W (146.7 cm x 31.8 cm); burner/font vessel: 12.5" L x 12.5" W x 15" H (31.8 cm x 31.8 cm x 38.1 cm); gold quality: 16% to 25% (equivalent to 3K+ to 6K)

  • Condition: Losses to thin brass panels protruding from the rim of the upper canopy and losses to dangling brass on the rim of the burner / font. Patina throughout and areas of green oxidation. Rivets on one cherub are replaced with iron nails. Rubbing and losses to areas of gilt. Electrical wiring is cut and non functional. Light sockets should be replaced. To avoid the hassle of rewiring, one could just remove the sockets use battery / phone app controlled candles /bulbs. The iron suspension rod can easily be removed if one desires. Worn and weathered, but has a lovely antique appeal.
