North America, Southwestern United States, ca. mid-19th century CE. An intimidating knife made of steel, cow horn, and brass with a broad cleaver blade. The blade is a thick and plain iron worked as a single cutting edge and thick spine that curves to the pointed tip. The tang is covered with 2 horn panels, both decorated with a hammered brass sheet that is incised with stippled and linear patterning. The grip is riveted in place and the tang tip has a projecting tab that is pierced for suspension. Size: 13.25" L x 2.45" W (33.7 cm x 6.2 cm); (blade): 8" L x 2.45" W (20.3 cm x 6.2 cm)

  • Condition: Pitting and nicks to the blade and dark patina. Blade is still sharp. The horn has cracking, chips, and losses, but is secure to the tang. Brass panels are also intact with nicks and dark toning around rivets. Great patina throughout and signs of age and use.
