Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of a rabbit laying recumbent atop an integral rectangular platform. The animal has all four legs retracted beneath its stocky body, a perky tail protruding from the verso, and lengthy ears folded against its back. Incised circular eyes with radiating lashes adorn each side of the ovoid head, and a serrated iron grating tool projects from its mouth. Traces of thick white pigment are visible within some areas, and lustrous patina envelopes the entire carving. Size: 20.5" L x 5.2" W x 6.7" H (52.1 cm x 13.2 cm x 17 cm).

  • Condition: Stabilization to some fissures, with minor abrasions and nicks to base, body, legs, and grating tool, fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigment within recessed areas. Old inventory label beneath base.
