Description:

**First Time At Auction**

South America, Andean highlands, late 19th to early 20th century. A wonderful ensemble of 6 portrait paintings. All depict bust-length, realistic renderings of indigenous peoples, probably Quechua Indian sitters wearing traditional dress, and all but one are signed by the artist, though the signature is difficult to decipher. The Quechua peoples live in the Andean highlands from Ecuador to Bolivia. The name Quechua also refers to their language which was the language of the Inca, though it actually predated the Inca and would later become the lingua franca of the Indians and the Spanish of the region. Six poignant portraits of indigenous South American sitters, all mounted behind glass in attractive frames. Size (largest sight view): 4.875" L x 3.875" W (12.4 cm x 9.8 cm) Size (largest frame): 11.25" L x 9.875" W (28.6 cm x 25.1 cm)

See similar portraits, albeit of a larger scale, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (1985.66.164,660 and 1985.66.164,661).

  • Condition: All six paintings are mounted under glass in attractive mattes and frames. Paintings have not been examined outside the frames but appear to be in very good condition. Five of the six paintings are signed seemingly by the same artist, though the signature is difficult to decipher. Frames show slight surface wear and a few have tears to the gallery paper on the versos that do not impact the paintings. Otherwise, frames are very nice and fit with suspension wires.
