Description:

Polynesia, Solomon Islands, Malaita Province, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. The indigenous peoples of the Solomon Islands have traditionally worn lavish personal ornaments including breastplates made from pearl shells, elaborate earplugs, necklaces comprised of shell and/or teeth, and combs made from coconut or palm wood fiberes like the trio featured here. The uppermost example is a "faa" or a man's woven comb from the Kwaio People of Malaita, woven with elaborate geometric designs from yellow orchid fibers and coconut palm frond fibers dyed red with a root called geru. The teeth of the comb are probably from an éa tree fern. The wickerwork presented on the comb is called boré and, traditionally, was woven using the wing bones of flying foxes. The comb in the center is comprised of a long, white bird bone, coconut or palm wood fibers, a natural cotton weaving boasting a lovely stylized, geometric pattern, and boré wickerwork. Finally, the comb displayed on the lowest tier is a seemingly simpler design, also comprised of coconut and/or palm fibers, the head, however, boasts an intricately woven pattern. A beautiful and rare ensemble of material culture from the Solomon Islands. Size: Faa comb measures 2.125" at widest point x 7.125" H (5.4 cm x 18.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Wolf collection, field collected in the 1950's
