Description:

Central Asia, Sino-Tibetan, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive cast bronze, gilded figure of Vajrapani-Acharya, the protector and guide of Gautama Buddha and one of the earliest bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. He is dressed in a tiger skin, wearing a crown, snake garlands, and large ring-shaped ear pendants. In his upraised right hand, he carries a vajra, a thunderbolt/mystical weapon (Vajrapani has been associated with thunder deities from earliest times and where Greek culture met Buddhist, he was often conflated with the god Hercules). He stands on a separately worked lotus base and with a separately worked flame aureole in the background. Size: 9" W x 12.9" H (22.9 cm x 32.8 cm)
