Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A wooden icon set into a silvered tin frame. The icon depicts the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph standing around the tripartite cross. The painting style suggests a folk artist. On the back are thin, looping, cursive letters made of silver, reading "OP". In order to support traveling priests on missions, religious objects were made that were small enough and light enough to be carried on long journeys through the often-difficult Russian landscape. Traveling icons like this one were widespread during the 19th century and are often mentioned in the writings of Pushkin and Chekhov. Size: 3.45" W x 4.45" H (8.8 cm x 11.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Francis & Lilly Robicsek Collection, Charlotte, NC
