Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden icon of a rectangular form depicting four saintly religious figures in maroon, black, and yellow pigment atop egg tempera. The minimalism in the illustrations suggests this was once covered by an oklad as each face bears a lighter area of light exposure. The figures depicted (top to bottom, left to right) are Jesus Christ, Saint Nicholas, Saint George, and an unidentified figure. Size: 8" W x 10.6" H (20.3 cm x 26.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Bill Bishop collection, Scottsdale, Arizona, USA, acquired before 1990
