Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Finely painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on wood, this icon depicts the twin brothers Saints Florus and Laurus standing in profile, with open hands facing one another in active conversation. The brothers were active practitioners of masonry in Dardania (modern-day Kosovo), and were reputed as being the caretakers of horses within the Russian Orthodox Church. After constructing a pagan temple, the son of the local pagan priest was injured by part of the temple. The brothers cured the boy after his conversion to Christianity, the temple was rid of all pagan imagery and then converted to a Christian monastery. Size: 3.25" W x 4.25" H (8.3 cm x 10.8 cm).
