Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Elegantly detailed in egg tempera on wood, an icon depicting Saint Nil Stolobenskii, a 15th/16th century monk who lived on an island in Lake Seliger. He is portrayed standing in a dark hooded vestment with a small orange-hued model that he is presenting to the Virgin Mother and infant Jesus in the upper right corner. The scale model at his feet is representative of the monastery he intended to construct if the Virgin Mother permitted it. Saint Nil eventually built the promised edifice shown in the foreground, and the line of Cyrillic text above him, when translated, describes him as, "The Venerable Nil Stolobenskii." Size: 2" W x 2.5" H (5.1 cm x 6.4 cm).
Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As a focus for prayers and meditation for believers, icons serve as windows into heaven.
