Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Finely painted with egg tempera and gesso on wood with gilt and silvered details, an icon of Saint Sergius of Radonezh draped in heavy, black vestments with a cross-adorned cape as he grasps a scroll of religious text in his left hand and offers benediction with his right. The Heavenly Father presides over the saint, while 3 additional holy figures stand in the borders, all labelled in fanciful Church Slavic script. Sergius is well-known for his visions of the Trinitarian mystery, whose messages he advocated, and is believed to be the first Russian saint to record his visions of the Mother of God. He is also the founder of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity near Moscow. A stunning icon of one of the most highly venerated saints in the Russian Orthodox Church! Size: 10.9" W x 12.6" H (27.7 cm x 32 cm)
