Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. Finely painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on gesso atop wood, a beautiful icon depicting the image of Saint Stylianos (Stylian in English and Stylianus in Latin), also known as Stylianos the Hermit, depicted holding a swaddled infant - a traditional symbol of his iconography - in his right hand while he grasps a scroll in his left. The holy figure stands on a tiled floor draped in a red cape and orange robe with a blue scarf that hangs below his lengthy beard. His haloed head presents an aged visage with slender eyes beneath a furrowed brow, a noble nose, and a petite pair of ears that sit just beneath his tonsured coiffure. Buildings of a city and city walls, likely that of Stylianos' hometown Adrianopolis, are shown in the background, representing how the saint cast off civilization to lead a life of asceticism in the desert. Saint Stylianos is known as the protector of children, especially orphans, and childless women often entreat his intercession so that they might have children. Size: 9.8" W x 13.5" H (24.9 cm x 34.3 cm)
