Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A brass enameled icon depicting three early bishops, probably Saints James of Jerusalem, Nicholas of Myra, and Ignatius of Antioch. Each wears a decorated phelonion and holds a book. The iconography of the early bishops was popular in Russia after the fifteenth century because of a growing interest in the ecumenical councils that established much of the religion, and they are often depicted in icons from that period onward. Along the top of the icon is a row of projecting angels looking down on the scene, with God the Father in the center. This is a traveling icon, made in order to support traveling priests on missions, small enough and light enough to be carried on long journeys through a difficult landscape. Size: 4.8" W x 7.8" H (12.2 cm x 19.8 cm)
