Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely enameled silver icon pendant depicting the Virgin Orans (also Orant from the verb orare meaning to pray) - the Virgin and Child, with Mary making a dramatic prayerful gesture, her arms raised and the palms of her hands turned upward toward the heavenly realm. This pose was, according to scholar Alfredo Tradigo, "the simplest means by which early Christian art represented the soul of the deceased (often a martyr) awaiting eternal life in Christ." Her pose recalls that of Christ on the Cross and shows her sending prayers outward. The imagery is delineated in repousse with wonderful enameled details in cobalt blue, aqua, kelly green, and golden yellow hues. An integral loop atop makes the pendant ready to wear on your favorite chain. Size: 1.5" W x 1.625" H (3.8 cm x 4.1 cm); 1.875" H (4.8 cm) including loop; weight: 12.8 grams; silver quality: 92.25%.
