Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely cast-brass, three-bar cross with the crucified Christ taking central place, the short topmost bar representing the sign reading, "This is the King of the Jews" from Luke 23:38 that was nailed to the top of Christ's cross. Twin cherubs fly downwards towards Christ, and above them a minute depiction of God the Father. Beneath Christ is an image of Adam's skull in the cave to remind us that Adam lost Paradise through forbidden knowledge, and Christ will return us to it. The verso is recessed and unadorned.
