Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A cast bronze traveling icon depicting the Harrowing of Hell, Christ's triumphant descent into hell between the Crucifixion and Resurrection, when he brought salvation to the all of the righteous dead. In this depiction, he stands in the center, arms spread, wearing long robes; the terrestrial world, with rolling hills and trees, forms the upper border, while below are the creatures of hell and the dead reaching towards Him. An upper border in Cyrillic describes the scene. This icon and others like it were used by traveling priests to tell the story of Christ. Size: 2" W x 2.75" H (5.1 cm x 7 cm)
