Description:

Western Europe, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful glass intaglio pendant boasting a deep hue of burgundy and fit with a rose gold setting. Meticulously carved, the circular intaglio features the head of a male youth in profile facing left, presenting large eyes, a sharp nose, plump lips, and a jutting chin, all crowned by a thick coiffure of luscious coils. A lion's tail wraps around the neck of the handsome figure, while 2 claws of a lion's paw are seen in front of him and a stippled club is pictured behind, all suggesting that this figure is likely the Roman hero Hercules - Greek Herakles. A pair of rose gold wires wrap around the top of the twisted gold frame, attaching at the side and hooking into a loop at the top, which allows the pendant to be suspended and worn on a necklace. Size (pendant): 1.2" Diameter (3 cm); (intaglio): 0.8" Diameter (2 cm); gold quality: 56.1% (equivalent to 13K+); weight: 9.6 grams
