Description:

Central Asian, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. An amazing pendant - bronze, gilded in places, with a silver back, and containing inlaid turquoise and dark red coral - all surrounding a crystal in the form of a fierce face with glowing red coral eyes. Pointed ears and two curly horns project from the sides of his head; his arms, studded with armor, including wristguards with raised bronze bosses, extend downward from the sides of his head. His hands hold ropes that flow to his mouth, reminiscent of serpents. Below his chin is a teardrop-shaped inlaid turquoise stone that hangs down on a two-link bronze chain. The back of the pendant is flat silver, with thin gilded wires forming letters and an auspicious symbol in the center. Size: 2.9" W x 3.6" H (7.4 cm x 9.1 cm)

The face represent Mahakala, the Tibetan Buddhist figure known as "Great Black One" or "Great Time." Time is believed to be the destroyer of everything, and is therefore symbolic of death.
