Description:

Persia, Qajar, late 19th to early 20th century. A stunning Qajar painted wooden mirror case, the arched front cover finely decorated with Persian miniature painting depicting multiple court and garden scenes and surrounded by a floral border. On the opposite side of mirror cover is a charming painting of a flower arrangement. Finally, adorning the verso of the case are miniature paintings of royal men on horseback engaged in a hunt or a battle. Size: 6.6" W x 9.9" H (16.8 cm x 25.1 cm)

Qajar painting is rooted in a painting style that developed during the preceding Safavid empire when there was much European influence on Persian culture, particularly in the visual culture of the royalty and the noble classes. European masters, like Rubens and Rembrandt, were particularly influential. Qajar painting adopted the use of rich, saturated colors and a blend of idealism and realism.
