Description:

**Originally Listed At $1200**

Oceania, Polynesia, Samoa, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden model of an outrigger canoe with a narrow hull body featuring four seat planks attached to the ends of four boom arms. The outrigger float is fastened to the other ends of the boom arms via lengths of woven thread, and a pair of lateral beams provides extra stability to the vessel when in motion. Included with the model are a trio of petite paddles bearing petaloid heads and slender handles. Wooden boat models like this example were created as a means of optimizing one's canoe design while using minimal materials. Size (w/ boom arms): 20.4" L x 7.1" W (51.8 cm x 18 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Aguttes auction, Paris, France (April 6, 2017, lot 437)
