North America, Central Plains, Lakota, Cheyenne, or Arapaho, ca. late 19th century. Three group portraits of native peoples who appear to be members of the same tribe - either Lakota, Cheyenne, or Arapaho - based on their clothing style and beadwork patterns. The sitters wear indigenous clothing, beaded hair ornaments, and moccasins - and some of the sitters hold bows and arrows or staffs. Sadly, during the 19th century, boarding schools under the auspices of the United States federal government, such as the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania founded by Captain Henry Pratt in 1879, aimed to "Kill the Indian; Save the Man" and forced indigenous peoples to assimilate to Western norms - cutting their hair, having them dress in western suits and corseted dresses, and forbidding the students from speaking their language. We are fortunate to have images like these three photographs which present native peoples in their traditional clothing and hairstyles.
