Description:

Southeast Asia, Philippines, Mindanao Island, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely brass heirloom urn featuring a globular form, a flared foot, a short, columnar neck, and a fitted lid with a tall finial. Fascinating applied geometric motifs cover the body, in a series of ornate spirals, circles, and diamonds that taken together suggest stylized vines and blooming flowers. Urns of this sort were used to hold the ceremonial gifts given to a bride's family by the groom's family during wedding celebrations. Size: 9.5" W x 22.5" H (24.1 cm x 57.2 cm)

Provenance: private Johnson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA; ex-collection of P. Badillo, an expert on Mindanao brass wares
