Description:

Southeast Asia, Philippines, Ifugao province, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden offering dish supported by zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figures on an integral base - two human figures squatting, one with his hands on his thighs, the other with arms crossed on his chest. Two creatures with long bodies, perhaps reptiles, rest on their tails, and the heads of all four figures support the bowl. The shallow bowl has a scalloped rim, the traditional style of duya bowls. Duyas were ritualistic vessels for sipping rice wine or presenting offerings. These ceremonial bowls were polished with animal fat and developed dark patinas from smoke as they were often kept near a hearth, as we see in this fine example! Size: 3.125" W x 3.75" H (7.9 cm x 9.5 cm)
