Description:

Central Asia, Persia / Iran, Qajar Dynasty, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An antique ceramic tile painted and glazed with a woman and indoor scene, the interior framed by curtains, and balustrade railing. Such tiles were popular decorative elements in architecture during the Qajar dynasty, and many images were revivals of earlier Achaemenid and Sasanian themes. The tile is mounted in a custom carved wooden frame as an impressive display piece. The columns and architectural style of the wood resembles a window looking in on the tile scene. Size of wood frame: 19" L x 2" W x 25.75" H (48.3 cm x 5.1 cm x 65.4 cm); tile: 12.5" L x 9" W (31.8 cm x 22.9 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, inherited via grandfather, who collected before 1980
