Description:

Papua New Guinea, Lower Sepik River, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautifully carved wooden ancestral figure donning a grand six-tiered conical headdress upon an overized head, with an abstract, mask-like avian head presenting an expressive visage with downward slanting concentric ovoid eyes and a protruding pointy beak that extends to the figure's abdomen just above his penis. The figure sits or crouches in the nude, facing forward with hands at sides resting upon boldly carved legs. A wonderful sculpture that has developed a lustrous dark brown patina over time. Size: 8.125" H (20.6 cm); 8.625" H (21.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex Paul Harris collection, acquired from Kirby Lewis in 1980s
