Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Asmat or Nakanai culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fantastic example of a parrying shield; tall and slender with painted motifs. The verso has a cutout rectangular area that forms a handle, and the obverse face as a thick central "boss" the protrudes a few inches outward from the rest of the panel. Painted on the shield are scrolling motifs and repeated concentric diamond / linear patterns. Shields ere used for parrying blows during warfare and during peacetime for ceremonial dances. Size: 8.5" L x 3" W x 68.5" H (21.6 cm x 7.6 cm x 174 cm)
