East Asia, Taiwan, Paiwan culture, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden shaman box depicting several stylized figures on the sides and lid. Atop the lid is a large female figure in prostrate position with an elaborate headdress, and on each end is a petite maskette. The hinged lid opens smoothly, and the interior would have contained items used in shamanic ceremonies. Size: 5.2" L x 12.5" W x 4.25" H (13.2 cm x 31.8 cm x 10.8 cm)
