Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Northern Arizona, Havasupai / Hualapai, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A large burden / gathering basket twined from willow with a pair of hide loops for the tump line, and a thick hide is sewn to the conical tip. This leather patch is likely bison, which is strong and much thicker than deer or elk. The interior is covered in a dark pine pitch or some other substance that probably acted as a sealant. Due to a semi-nomadic lifestyle, they heavily relied on woven vessels rather than pottery for most of their needs. Size: 22" Diameter x 16" H (55.9 cm x 40.6 cm)
