Description:

Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. 1868 to 1912 CE. An incredible matched set of cast bronze chickens, one a larger rooster whose body is a censer, the other a smaller hen. Both are lifelike, with extensive detailing on their plumage, combs, and wattles. The rooster also has a tremendous set of tail feathers. They are posed naturalistically, standing with their heads up, the rooster with his mouth open as if crowing. The rooster has a small opening on his back disguised to look like feathers that can be removed in order to insert incense. Size of rooster, which is approximately twice the size of the hen: 10" L x 5.9" W x 12.2" H (25.4 cm x 15 cm x 31 cm)

Items of this style are known as okimono, ornaments for display/decorative objects. During the Meiji period, Japan opened to trade with the West. There was an immediate demand for their distinctive decorative arts, and artists like Yamada Sobi (1871-1916 CE) created metalwork items that were meant for export to western consumers. Many of these took the form of animals like these two, highlighting the detail and realism that Japanese artists were capable of, as well as their keen observational eye for natural subjects.
