Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful oil on canvas painting depicting the Virgin and Child amid billowing clouds flanked by two floating angels donning cascading scarlet wraps and presenting the Madonna and Baby Jesus with wreaths of peace and lilies (the Virgin's atrribute symbolizing her purity). This type of composition is known as 'Mater Arnabilis' and shows the Virgin half-length, wearing her traditional colors, the jewel-tone red robe under the rich blue cloak that is initialed with her ciphers and lined with gold and white lace, supporting the Child in her arms, and surrounded by radiant rays of light and stars. The Virgin wears a golden bejeweled crown and supports a similarly crowned Christ Child whose nude body is covered by a transparent robe. Scenes of the maternal Virgin imbued with tender human emotion like this example were introduced during the Renaissance, when artists, including Fra Filippo Lippi and Sandro Botticelli, departed from the more formal, stiffly rendered depictions of the Medieval period. It is a touching scene, and this rendition displays a fine painting technique and a nicely balanced composition. Set in a custom natural linen and gold hued mount within a carved and painted wooden frame.
