Description:

North America, Pacific Northwest, Nutka, ca. 19th century CE. This fetish was made to symbolize/commemorate a successful hunt, as thanks to the Gods for survival. This large polar bear tooth has been wrapped in a hand-woven basketry blanket of sorts, to commemorate a special event. Created by the Nutka or Nuu-chah-nulth people, indigenous culture of the Pacific Northwest Coast in Canada. In pre-contact and early post-contact times, the number of Nutka nations was much greater, but smallpox and other consequences of contact resulted in the disappearance of some groups and the absorption of others into neighboring groups. The Nutka excelled in intricate basket weaving like we see in this example. Size: 4"L x 2'W + custom stand. Provenance: Ex-private Richardson collection, a private museum in Massachusetts, US. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108943
