West Africa, Nigeria, Idoma / Igbo culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A dense wooden mask known as an ikpobi with a stylized anthropomorphic face painted with white kaolin and black pigments, the red mouth is textile added between the carved teeth. Ikpobi masks were worn on the forehead of a young man during ceremonies and performance that involved warriors and battle victories. Size: 6.5" L x 7" W x 12" H (16.5 cm x 17.8 cm x 30.5 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.
