Description:

Nepal, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask used by Nepalese shamans in various rites; to cure illness, cast out demons, and perform exorcisms. Nicely detailed with deeply-set almond-shaped eyes, openwork pupils, incised brows above and 'bags' below the eyes embellished with added red and black pigment, a long protruding, slightly upturned nose, highly placed ears, a painted black mustache, and a toothy open down-turned mouth. A very expressive example on a custom stand with wonderful time-worn patina. Size: 9.375" L x 5.75" W (23.8 cm x 14.6 cm); 11.875" H (30.2 cm) on included custom stand.
