Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An aesthetically beautiful wooden butter churn handle, known as a ghurra or neti. Churning rod holders consist of a ring (ghurra) which is present here, with surface wear indicating that this example was used. A churning rod would have been inserted through the ring when the piece was still functional. Below the ring is a handle, here carved with abstract relief geometric patterns. A leather strap hangs down from the handle. Among the Ghurung and Magar people of western Nepal, butter churns like this one are traditional gifts indicating interest in marriage between families. Size: 4.2" W x 11.65" H (10.7 cm x 29.6 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.
