Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, Himalayan region, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine hand-carved wood mask comprised of an ovoid, convex head and a rectangular handle that projects downwards from the bottom. The stylized visage presents slender, openwork eyes beneath a heavy brow, a straight nose, a prominent chin, risen cheek bones, and a petite mouth held slightly open beneath a crescent-shaped moustache, all flanked by a pair of circular ears. The extended handle exhibits a high, central rib that divides it in half vertically and is adorned by a series of incised parallel striations. A rich mocha-hued patina envelops the entirety of this unique vizard. Size: 6.5" W x 15.625" H (16.5 cm x 39.7 cm)

  • Condition: Old repairs to top periphery and bottom right of verso. Face has 3 areas of minor loss on proper right side. Stable fissures to handle, only visible on verso. Expected light nicks and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with lovely patina.
