Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wood mask comprised of an ovoid, convex face with simple details, eye holes, rounded nose with nostrils, open mouth, and horse or goat hair mustache and goatee. The sides are pierced for suspension and the surface of the wood has a dark and lustrous coloration. Yak butter was often rubbed into these masks then charred to create the patina and were often worn by Shamans in rituals. Size: 8" L x 6.75" W (20.3 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
