Central Asia, Nepal, ca. mid 19th century CE. A high relief wood carving of a Garuda, a half-man half-bird figure who is the devotee and vehicle mount (vahana) of Vishnu, depicted frontally with its feathery body and beaked head, sitting with legs bent inwardly at the knees and feet touching one another, and holding long serpents in his upraised hands. The highly decorated Garuda donning an elaborate headdress and jewelry is adorning an entablature-like architectural element. Mortise and tenon joint connections are visible atop, below, and behind the figure. A wonderful carving of this mesmerizing mythological creature. Size: 6.75" L x 7.125" W x 13" H (17.1 cm x 18.1 cm x 33 cm); 15.5" H (39.4 cm) on included custom stand.
