Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A special prayer book that contains 12 loose leaves between the cardstock covers which are embossed like the hinge straps on a medieval tome. The interior of the cover is illustrated with a small shrine containing leaves, conch shell, and small mirror in metallic silver and golden hues. The leaves are double sided, 25 pages total, with red ink Nepalese calligraphic script - some pages have silvered borders. When not in use, the book rests in a cotton cloth with faint floral motifs, permanently creased with the indentations from the book, a tie cord with a red stone bead then binds this makeshift shroud. Size: 4.1" W x 5.75" H (10.4 cm x 14.6 cm)

  • Condition: Minor abrasions to both covers and some pages, with fading to pigments of text and illustration, staining and fading to pigments on cloth wrap, and separation of one page from inside of front cover. Nice remains of pigment throughout.
