Description:

Western Europe, probably Italy, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A fine portrait bust of the Italian Neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova, skillfully carved from red marble boasting a deep hue of burgundy with natural black and cream striations. Often regarded as the greatest of the Neoclassical artists, Canova's sculpture was inspired by the Baroque and the classical revival, and has been characterized as having avoided the melodramatics of the former, and the cold artificiality of the latter. "A. CANOVA" is inscribed at the bottom of the bust. Size: 1.5" L x 1.75" W x 3.4" H (3.8 cm x 4.4 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: private Ferndale, Michigan, USA collection; ex-private Detroit, Michigan, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004
