Western Europe, probably England, Italy, or France, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A sumptuous cabochon with a body that is hand-carved from banded agate of green and brown hues and a central cameo of the Greek goddess of love Aphrodite (Roman Venus). Aphrodite gazes to her right while holding one hand to her mouth, with bangs draped across her shoulders, and a coiffure of neat plaits bound on the verso in a tight bun. She dons a thin shawl across her bicep and upper body that accentuates her feminine appeal. Size (cameo): 1" W x 0.7" H (2.5 cm x 1.8 cm); (figure): 0.8" W x 0.6" H (2 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Madame Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, acquired in the 1960s
