Description:

Native American, Western United States, Wyoming, perhaps Crow or Arapahoe people, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A collection of glass trade beads and canine teeth strung along a sinew cord as a necklace. The teeth are probably from a canid such as a coyote, and the roots of some near the center are etched with linear patterns. The trade beads originated in Europe and were brought to North America to barter with Native American tribes throughout the 1800s, and the beads were incorporated into special regalia along with other traditional materials. Size of strand doubled: 25" L (63.5 cm); teeth: 1.25" L x 0.25" W (3.2 cm x 0.6 cm)
