Description:

Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, Sioux (Lakota), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a gorgeous leather wrist cuff or gauntlet that is painstakingly hand stitched with hundreds of glass seed beads. The rectangular panel of leather is laid flat, tapering slightly inward to fit around the wrist on the shorter length, the other, longer side around the forearm. The outer face contains vertical ridges of beading using lane (lazy) stiches threaded with approximately 10 beads each stitch in hues of pink, chalky white, periwinkle blue, red, yellow, and black. The hems are trimmed with pink, a white border framing the blue ground with diamond and triangular motifs. Beading is an incredibly time-consuming process, and such pieces were prized items rank and used for trade. Western Sioux women generally used geometric motifs and symbols while eastern tribes made organic floral designs. The peripheries of the width would have once had several strips of leather cords to secure the cuff around the wrist. Size: 9.25" L x 5.25" W (23.5 cm x 13.3 cm)
