Description:

Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, Ojibwa, Arapahoe, Oceti Sakowin (Lakota), or Shoshone people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden mirror board staff with a mirror inlay set into the top with brass tacks and hide tassel at the top. Europeans traded mirrors and metal objects with the tribes they encountered which then created tools and ritualistic items. Mirrors set into boards and staffs, such as this, not only served as reflective surfaces for applying face paint - but could be used to signal to troops via glinting sun rays. Mirror boards were also carried alongside ritualistic regalia as well - the luminous surface of the mirror denoted sunlight and prosperity - and they were put into wood panels to wear or hold while dancing. Size: 6.5" L x 0.5" W x 23.5" H (16.5 cm x 1.3 cm x 59.7 cm)
