Description:

Native American, central United States, Great Plains, Plains Indians, ca. 19th century CE. A fine axe with a long wooden handle and a triangular iron head. Slightly curved, the iron axe head tapers to a short point at one end and has a broad edge at the other. The tubular handle boasts a lustrous burnish and the natural tan woodgrain with brass embellishments adorning its surface, including three bands, six circles, and two diamond shapes. Thin strands of leather are wrapped around the area just below the head and at the base, with one thicker piece tied to form a loop for suspension. The iron axe head is stamped with the name "A. Maynard" and the letter A inside a five-pointed star indicates that it was likely made by an American settler manufacturer and acquired via trade with settlers. Size: 7" W x 15.4" H (17.8 cm x 39.1 cm)
