Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, ca. 19th century CE. A smoothly-carved stone pestle with a broad pounding head, a thick shaft, and a flat handle. The surface is smooth and was probably formed using the pecking and grinding method of shaping stone into tools which give it the polished surface. This pestle may have been used to pound berries, dried meat, and other ingredients for food like pemmican, or for medicinal purposes. Size: 3.1" L x 2.9" W x 6.5" H (7.9 cm x 7.4 cm x 16.5 cm)
