Description:

Native American, Northwestern United States, Hupa tribe, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An exquisite storage container, hand-carved from a piece of elk antler. The piece features ribbed ends and a slit down the center that reveals the hollow cavity within. The exterior is carved with geometric motifs. Containers such as this were purses for holding long and narrow dentalium shells, which were a form of currency and a symbol of wealth. Size: 6.25" L x 1.5" W (15.9 cm x 3.8 cm)

  • Condition: Natural ossification of antler. Small perforations on each end have been filled with resin and are an old repair. Minor surface nicks. Great preservation of carvings.
